The restoration was a five-year labour of love by the Everard family, with Mrs Everard personally overseeing the interior design – expertly balancing historical authenticity with the personality and warmth of a real family home.
The vaulted ceilings of the drawing room were rebuilt at a height of 20 feet, with architects and specialist builders using the original ceiling supports in the castle walls to ensure authenticity. The ceilings were painstakingly hand-painted with murals of Irish flora, fauna and bird life by a talented local artist.
Period-style fireplaces were commissioned and handmade in Italian marble by Morrisseys of Dublin who were also responsible for impressive handmade fireplaces in The Shelbourne Hotel Dublin. 14 foot high mirrors were made to order from the designs of Mrs. Everard, while the floor coverings were made in India to a colour scheme chosen to reflect the ceiling murals.
Zane Everard, one of the sons of the Everard family, now operates the castle. He is a trained architect who specialises in the restoration of historic buildings – a career choice that was no doubt influenced by his early involvement in such a momentous restoration project.
My group of 14 rents a place each year and the challenge is to top the year before. Lisheen Castle is now at the top of the list, which includes a chateau in Normandy, villas in Italy, a palace in Spain, and a castle in Austria. The host and the staff were wonderful, and the setting is something out of a story book. In short a great experience. Don’t hesitate. Go there.
Fabulous experience for my wife and I as well as our children and grandchildren. Living in a beautifully restored 19th century castle with all the modern conveniences was a unique experience my family will never forget. The central location allowed for easy day trips by car or rail to all our preferred locations. Zane, the owner, was a gracious host and always easily reachable to answer any questions.
My daughter and then-fiancé decided to marry in a castle. An Irish friend helped her find the castle. The entire castle was rented for a week and the wedding took place at the beginning of that week. There were nearly 20 people in the group.
The setting was beautiful, the castle is well maintained and provided everything we needed to take care of a group of people ranging in age from mid-70s to 3 years old. Lots of extras such as videos for the kids, Irish music and a CD player, and there was even a suit of armor!
Since we rented the entire castle, no services were provided, but the kitchen had everything we need to feed this group.By any definition I can think of, the kitchen was well stocked. The library was a nice place to gather and talk as was the informal dining area just outside the kitchen. The wedding dinner was served in the formal dining room which was large enough to accommodate the entire party. The castle is two floors with the sleeping areas on the upper floor and there are no elevators. Rooms were spacious and comfortable with a bathroom in each.
I would have no hesitation in either recommending Lisheen Castle to friends or staying there again.
It’s not everyday you get to stay in a castle. Our family of 14 had an amazing experience staying at the Lisheen Castle. From the little touches of antiques, paintings, and old photographs to the amazing views of the Ireland countryside and the beautiful Castle grounds. The central location was great with the town of Thurles a short drive away and many other main attractions of Ireland within manageable distances. We had our own personal driver in the wonderful Tom, who did a terrific job managing the narrow windy roads and getting us place to place safely! Tom and Mary were even kind enough to make the two hour drive to the Shannon Airport twice when we had late arrivals and early departures in our group.
Zane not only assured that everything was perfect upon arrival, he continuously throughout our stay made sure that everything was perfect and ensured that we wanted for nothing. The first night in the castle we were without wifi (God forbid!!) and we informed Zane, the next day someone was at the castle fixing the problem and we had no more problems the rest of the stay. His quickness and attentiveness to the fix the problem was greatly appreciated, especially with the internet obsessed young members of our family. 🙂 Our family would recommend the Lisheen Castle to anyone who asks. We all hope to go back someday in the future!
We had a group of 14 people and this made for a fantastic holiday. The property is in great shape; there are so many nooks and crannies to explore, including the grounds; the owners are so nice and responsive. We can’t recommend Lisheen Castle enough!
I stayed a week in the castle with a large group of friends. All the modern conveniences, plus a wonderful homey atmosphere and a strong sense of history. It proved the perfect location for short car trips to Waterford, Kinsale, the Rock of Cashel and other locations in the south of Ireland. Then, coming home to the castle every night! Our host could not have been nicer or more helpful. I’d love to return.
